Wissensstädte: Bibliotheken in Afrika | Poster einer Ausstellung

Relativ unerwartet erschien im Weblog des Instituts für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft der Humboldt-Universität im Herbst 2008 eine Einladung für die Ausstellung „Wissensstädte – Bibliotheken in Afrika“. Seitdem im Jahr 2000 der erste Band des Überblickswerks „Bibliotheken in Afrika“ von Rainer Strzolka (Strzolka, Rainer (2000) / Bibliotheken in Afrika. Band 1. – Hannover: Koechert [Arbeiten zur Bibliotheks- und Dokumentationspraxis : Reihe 2 ; 3]) – dessen zweiter Band mit dem für die Forschung notwendigen Literaturverzeichnis bislang immer noch nicht vom Verlag veröffentlicht wurde – und einem auf dieses Werk vorgreifenden Artikels des gleichen Autors ein Jahr zuvor (Strzolka, Rainer (1999) / Bibliotheken in Afrika : eine historische Annäherung. – In: Bibliothek. Forschung und Praxis, 23 (1999) 2, S. 157-193. – http://www.bibliothek-saur.de/1999_2/157.pdf) erschien, war zu diesem gesamten Themenkomplex, den unterschiedlichen Bibliothekswesen eines Kontinents mit aktuell über 900 Millionen Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern, offenbar kein deutschsprachiger Text mehr publiziert worden.

Nun gab es auf einmal eine Ausstellung. Drei Studierende der Afrikanistik hatten diese im Rahmen eines Seminars zu Städten in Afrika erarbeitet. In diesem Rahmen entstanden auch weitere Arbeiten, die zusammen mit der Eröffnung der Ausstellung im Oktober 2008 präsentiert wurden. Hauptthema des Seminars waren also nicht Bibliotheken, sondern afrikanische Städte und Mikropolitik. Dieser Blick ermöglichte es, Bibliotheken hauptsächlich als Einrichtungen mit einem gesellschaftlichen Auftrag zu verstehen und nicht die Interessen der Institution Bibliothek in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen. Dieser, gerade nicht bibliothekszentrierte Blick, schlug sich im Weg der Ausstellung nieder: Nachdem sie für einige Wochen in der Juristischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin gezeigt wurde, zog sie für Januar und Februar 2009 in das Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft um. Sie wird demnächst am Berliner Zentrum Moderner Orient (http://www.zmo.de/) zu sehen sein, eventuell auch noch an weiteren Orten. Ihren Heimatstandort hat sie seit Februar 2009 in der A. W. Amo Bibliothek gefunden, einer Einrichtung, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, für afrikanische Diaspora in Deutschland zu einem Anlaufpunkt mit Bibliothek, Informationsbüro, Buchladen und Verlag zu werden (http://amo.blogsport.de/2007/03/02/die-aw-amo-bibliothek-in-berlin/).

Freilich ist eine Ausstellung immer darauf angewiesen, Zusammenhänge in einer äußert kurzen Form darzustellen. Insoweit schneidet die Ausstellung die zahlreichen Themenstränge, die sie darstellt, immer nur an. Aber dies ist das Problem jedes Überblicks, dem mit einer Forschung zu den einzelnen Themensträngen begegnet werden kann. Nichtsdestotrotz ist diese Ausstellung bemerkenswert und liefert Ansichten, die über exotische Bilder von Kamelbibliotheken weit hinausgehen.

LIBREAS freut sich, dass sie diese Ausstellung in einer digitalen Form – die selbstverständlich nicht als vollständiger Ersatz für die tatsächliche Ausstellung gesehen werden kann – publizieren kann. Neben den Tafeln der Ausstellung haben wir kurz nach der Eröffnung der Ausstellung mit deren Macherin und Machern ein Podcast produziert, in welchem diese weiter in das Themengebiet einführen und auf die Spezifika bibliothekarischer Arbeit in Afrika eingehen. Zudem veröffentlichen wir eine Literaturliste, die im Rahmen des Projektes entstanden ist und hoffentlich als Grundlage für zukünftige Arbeiten dienen kann.
